Fiji Airways will introduce its new FlyWell programme for long-haul passengers flying to the USA, starting next month, aiming to improve passenger and crew well-being with wearable technology, mental performance drinks, red light therapy, and electromagnetic protection.

The programme is specifically designed to accelerate recovery during long-haul travel, with all components stated as science-backed. Initially, FlyWell products will be offered to Business Class guests, complimentary for the first two months before becoming available for purchase in the third month.

Paul Scurrah, MD CEO of Fiji Airways, stated, “FlyWell was born from a simple belief - that the journey should be part of the experience, not something guests need to recover from once they land. Each product has been carefully selected to help guests arrive at their destination feeling rested, energised, and at their best.”

Programme Components

Once on board, Business Class guests will receive a ‘wellness menu’ from which they can select items tailored to their needs. Key offerings include:

  • A device worn on the lower leg designed to promote circulation, reduce fatigue, and accelerate recovery during extended flights.
  • Sunset Lenses, which are glasses intended to help regulate light exposure within the aircraft cabin, supporting natural sleep cycles and encouraging rest in-flight.

Additionally, the Fiji Airways Premier Lounge will see the installation of electromagnetic field protection. This measure aims to mitigate exposure from common devices such as phones, laptops, and WiFi, which can impact the nervous system.

Expert Collaboration

The FlyWell programme was developed with the assistance of Da Rulk, a performance and recovery expert known for working with elite athletes and celebrities.

Da Rulk commented, “The goal is simple: give people practical tools that support the body while they travel.”

Why this matters

This initiative by Fiji Airways highlights the growing focus on integrating wellness services into travel, reflecting the broader expansion of the global wellness tourism industry, which is projected to reach $1.35 trillion by 2028. For medical tourism professionals, such programmes indicate an increasing patient expectation for health-conscious travel options, even outside traditional medical journeys.

What to watch

  • The expansion of FlyWell offerings beyond Business Class to other cabin categories.
  • The commercial uptake of FlyWell products once they transition from complimentary to paid.
